A Vision Was Born...
In 1933, Robert Sowery, a member of the Verdun Baptist Church, decided to have a home built in Crawford, Park, in the west end of the city of Verdun. After he, his wife and family had moved into their new home, he felt the need for a Christian witness in that section of the city. He decided to rent the Crawford Park Clubhouse on Sundays for church and Sunday School use. This new church was named the Crawford Park Mission.
Bob Sowery arranged for speakers and Sunday School teachers from his own and other churches to help as the work was started, in the fall of 1934. Onward Mission (now Onward Gospel Church) was able to supply many speakers and workers. Within a couple of years, due to the need for more space and because of the number of Lasalle residents attending, it was decided to move to Ville Lasalle. There they rented the local Canadian Legion Hall.
Continued growth made it necessary to build. The present structure was built in 1939 and the name was changed to Grace Church. |
